The Journey into Executive Coaching

I never set out to become an author, but I guess, with four books to my name, that is in part what I have become.  Equally, I never set out to become an executive coach, a leadership consultant, a conference presenter or a trainer and teacher of coaching.  And I do all of these things.

I did set out with a loose intent.  In my early twenties, while studying architecture in Dublin, Ireland, I was inspired to look beyond the somewhat narrow confines of that field, to understand more of what it takes to lead a fulfilling life.  I learned T’ai Chi, became vegetarian (for a short period – not many options back then), studied everything from Taoism to sports psychology.  I discovered that people could learn without being taught, and that this was more effective and much more fun.  That there was a high correlation between high performance and flow.  I honed my skills on the wet, windy tennis courts of South County Dublin as a tennis coach.

A chance meeting brought me to London, where a group of similarly minded people were establishing the first ‘coaching house’ with a focus on the corporate world.  And executive coaching was born.  I joined.

What came next

Later, I had the idea to set up an institution to train people in coaching, and The School of Coaching was launched in 1996. It became the premier coaching training organisation, with a great team behind it.

And I have had further chances, I was asked to write Effective Coaching by Orion, which was first published in 1996.  It’s now in its fourth edition and called Effective Modern Coaching, with more than 330,000 copies sold in English alone.  This was followed by Enabling Genius in 2016 and The Enabling Manger in 2022.

I have worked with organisations large and small in three of the four corners of the world.  I’ve Trained Premier Rugby Coaches in New Zealand and worked with the England Rugby senior coaches in 2017.

I still play tennis.  It’s my laboratory for my own learning and development.  Apart from which I love competing and play for my county veteran’s team and occasionally on the ITF Master’s tour.

After 38 years of living in London, I have moved to a quieter and infinitely friendlier location, Kenninghall, Norfolk with my wife Jo, to whom The Sessions is dedicated.
